Mr. McMillan joined the firm after serving as an Assistant County Attorney for Jefferson County, Alabama, from 2008 to 2014. During that time, Mr. McMillan helped oversee all of the County’s legal affairs and provided advice and counsel to the County Commission and other local elected officials. As an Assistant County Attorney, he was responsible for a wide array of county, municipal, civil rights, construction, procurement, transactional and employment issues, as well as providing legal assistance on complicated issues involving the operation of the second largest government in Alabama. He also regularly represented the county, its elected officials and employees in a variety of litigation matters, ranging from personal injury lawsuits to decades-old federal regulatory requirements. He has substantial experience in both EPA and ADEM regulations of waste-water facilities.

From 2003 to 2008, Mr. McMillan was in private practice and represented international and national insurance companies, property and casualty companies and insurance pools. He represented those insurers against first-party breach of contract and bad faith suits, as well as employment discrimination, general negligence and workers’ compensation litigation. He is a regular featured speaker in professional development and continuing education seminars for attorneys. Mr. McMillan is highly knowledgeable on topics regarding general insurance defense, labor law and workers’ compensation.

Attorney Alana S. Beard

Alana Beard joined the firm in 2016 after serving four years as an Assistant District Attorney in Walker County, Alabama. During that time, Ms. Beard represented the State of Alabama at the trial court level. Although she prosecuted cases of all varieties, she focused primarily in cases involving the physical and sexual abuse of children. During her time with the District Attorney’s Office, she routinely provided advice and counsel to law enforcement, social workers, multidisciplinary team members as well as victims and their families. As an Assistant District Attorney, Ms. Beard was responsible for building cases from the ground up, representing and navigating victims from the early stages of the investigation through conviction. She enjoys being in the courtroom and has tried numerous cases to successful jury verdicts. In addition to trial work, Ms. Beard has also defended Rule 32 petitions for post-conviction relief on behalf of the State of Alabama through both the District Attorney’s Office and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. Alana’s expertise in litigation, litigation strategy and courtroom management are a welcome addition to Sewell Sewell McMillan.
